Beaches



Sri Lanka is an island surrounded over 1000 km of golden beaches and are the best in the world.

Being a tropical island, it is endowed with an idyllic setting with swaying palms bending over the white sands lapped up by blue waters coral growths, pearl banks etc. So pull off your sandals and dip your toes into the clear, soft sands of the beach.

If you are keen on water sports, discover what an aquatic playground the beaches of Sri Lanka would be for snorkelling, windsurfing, fishing and sailing. Swimming diving, sunbathing and just relaxing are some of the favourite pastimes of the tourist. You would never miss still a favourite form of fishing in the beaches in the South,  stilt- fishing, a popular sight along the coast to the deep south.


South Cost

This coastline has some beautiful beaches, diving and snorkeling opportunities, historic and interesting sights without crowds.  Bundala, Yala National Parks can be accessed easily from Galle which is in the South Coast- one of the most interesting old towns in Sri Lanka.

The wide Bentota River separates the sandy beaches of Beruwala from the adjacent resorts of Bentota.  Beruwala is located 60 km South of Colombo on the main west coast road (Galle road), then you reach at Bentota beach which stretches upto  all the way to Hikkaduwa Beach which is 100 km away from Colombo city.  Hikkaduwa is famous for its surf and coral reef as well as its wide range of accommodation and activities such as beach parties.  

Beyond Galle, 125 km from Colombo to the south, is a beautiful stretch of beach known as Unawatuna and was ranked as one of the world famous beaches in 2010.  It's famous for snorkeling or scuba diving over wrecks, or enjoy lazing on the palm-shaded beach or swimming in the calm clear sea.


 Tangalle has four kilometers of sandy beaches, famous for its softest sand and the safest sea along the entire south coast. You could also watch nesting marine turtles drag themselves ashore at night to lay their eggs.
From Tangalle Bay to Weligama is a beautiful coastline and the Forbes magazine has rated this among Asia’s Best Beaches.

Ahangama and Koggala beaches are famous for stilt fishing - fishermen perch on stilts wedged deep into the sand just offshore, sitting on a crossbar and using a line to catch fish as they move with the tide.
There are many beach resorts and high end hotels along the southwest coast offering major water sports including swimming, water skiing on the rivers, snorkelling, scuba diving, wind surfing, parasailing and fishing.  Shops along this south coast sell beach wear, renting out bicycles, offering courses in scuba diving and selling all kinds of local souvenirs, batik fabric and jewellery.

West Coast

Fine sandy beaches of Negombo has been unexplored, so the beach is mostly to your self.  Fine beach stretches are superbly maintained by the hotels.  You can enjoy water sports such as diving, wind surfing at most the hotels along this stretch of beaches.

Kalpitiya is the best place  if you are interested in seeing Dolphins.

East Cost

Kalkuda and Pasikuda are two unspoilt, untouched beaches in the East coast of Sri Lanka. Their white sands, calm waters and beauty remain unrivalled.



 Trincomalee, with its magnificent deep harbor and the golden sands of Nilaveli beach under the sunny sky is a beach that should not be missed by any visitor to Sri Lanka


Arugam Bay, is referred to as one of the top ten surf points in the world by the international surfing community – touted as 4th best in South East Asia.  It’s  surfing season begins from May and ends in September.
