The waterfalls in the hill country provide kayaking and canoeing opportunities whilst the Mahaweli River provide ample rapids for those seeking the adrenaline rush of white water rafting. Camping and trekking in the Central Highlands is of the real experiences for those who are looking to go back to nature.
Backpacking and cycling are great ways to discover this island and allow for travellers to feel, taste and hear Sri Lanka, untainted. Hot Air Ballooning above Sigiriya or over the cultural triangle gives an ethereal perspective to the kingdoms of yore.
Shark, Marlin, Tuna, in deep-water game fishing roam Sri Lanka’s deep seas. The hospitable local fishermen willingly to invite visitors to join them on their daily or nightly excursions off the coastline.
Swimming
With 1,300 kilometers of palm-fringed golden beaches right around the island, swimming in the ocean is a thrill that must experience in one’s visit to Sri Lanka. The beaches of the west and south coasts are ideal for serious and recreational swimmers between April and November. Swimming in the Southern coast of Hikkaduwa might experience a once in a lifetime thrill of swimming with the rare leatherback or olive ridley turtles.
White water rafting
Kithulgala is famous for white water rafting. After navigating the Virgin’s Breast, you move through another couple of rapids before hitting the Killer Fall, which is a 90-degree drop and plenty of churning water really gets the adrenalin going. As the rapids dwindle to a patch of calm waters, the rafters are encouraged to jump in and body raft, just going with the flow past the riverine scenery of towering stands of bamboo, fruit trees and palms.
Rock Climbing
With a large mountainous region in the centre of Sri Lanka in the hill country with huge boulder outcrops in countless areas, the island is ideal for rope sports.

Surfing
The east coast’s Arugam Bay is the best –kept secret among serious surfers, through gaining popularity worldwide not only for its waves but also for the unspoilt golden sandy beaches that surround it. Once the Arugam Bay season is over, at southern coast in Hikkaduwa, Wewala and Narigama, surfing season begins.
Diving
Hikkaduwa and Weligama Bay is known for diving. As you plunge into the warm waters and dive below, these stories of regal maritime visits, bandits and pirates and journeys of explorers and spice merchants to life. The crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean with a visibility of 20 meters (65ft) provide perfect conditions for diving. With wrecks as date back to the 18th Century, deep reefs and reef walls provide enthralling explorations for scuba divers. On-shore coral reefs are ideal for snorkelling. The abundant marine life found around the island is surpassed only at Hikkaduwa in the southern coast where the reef is thought to contain more species of fish than the Great Barrier Reef.Whale and dolphin watching
The ideal locations for whale watching would be Dondra Point in the Southern coastal area and Trincomalee while the sea off Kalpitiya teems with an abundance of dolphins. Mischievous dolphins will put on a show while some of the oldest and the largest sea creatures, the humpback and the blue whales, will glide past you, when you embark on a whale/ dolphin watching excursion off the Southern, Eastern or the West coast of Sri Lanka.
Hiking and Trekking
A trek in the Knuckles Range that is high in the mountain rainforest, and see the valuable spice – cardamom - growing in the forest, catch sight of rare orchids and birds.
Ballooning
Adventure on a multi-coloured hot-air balloon drifting silently above the forests in Dambulla and Sigiriya, gives you a whole new experience. Balloons that travel with the wind, make for one of the most surreal and tranquil sensations of flight.
Golfing
Asia’s second oldest Royal Golf Course is situated in the misty fairways of the Nuwara Eliya, With a history dating back to 1897, Sri Lanka’s three golf courses offer three completely different experiences to the golf players. The tropical ambience of the Royal Colombo Golf Course is complemented by the fir-lined, whilst the Victoria International Golf and Country Resort set in Kandy, is a modern challenging course along eight kilometers of the scenic Victoria Reservoir in Kandy.
